In case you’re a New Yorker who is clueless, we just ended Fashion Week here in NYC. The streets were filled with even more gorgeous people than usual wearing all Black and leather ensembles sweating in this Indian Summer.
While an exciting time in the city, it was also a very exciting 10 days for our neighbors in Canada: The Toronto International Film Festival, or TIFF for short, was in full swing.
For some reason it’s always the buzziest film festival and one of my favorites. Maybe it’s because Canadian’s are so damn nice? Maybe it’s because we are entering award season? Either way, with so many events— Red Carpets, press conferences, etc.— there’s a nice range of looks and this year some serious Fashion and screen heavyweights hit TIFF.
Rounded up are some of the best to the not so great. Take a look, sound off, thanks for staying with us, and enjoy the gorgeous weekend ahead!
Naomi Watts, Balmain- “Demolition” Premiere
After a not so great showing last week, Naomi Watts was back in full Fashion force in a nude cascading Balmain halter gown paired with perfectly dewey make-up and complimentary waves. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I love what Ms.Watts is serving up: Flamingo dancer Realness.
Jake Gyllenhaal, Salvatore Ferragamo- “Demolition” Premiere
I honestly have nothing to say about Jake Gyllenhaal in his perfectly cut Salvatore Ferragamo charcoal and burgundy combo suit. Always the handsome devil, this one.
Natalie Portman, Lanvin- “A Tale of Love and Darkness” Premiere
Natalie Portman has kept herself in my good graces by donning yet another gorgeous look, this time by way of a custom celestial themed Lanvin blush colored lacy and embellished gown.
The dress is perfectly draped giving the petite brunette an aura of Old Hollywood glam but still feeling fresh and unique. Snaps for Ms.Portman.
Naomi Watts, Burberry- “Demotion” Press Conference
Ms.Watts looked gorgeous in a Black and White chevron eyelet Burberry long sleeved mini with matching heels and a soft wave. Second to her killer ruffled Balmain this is my favorite look from the actress.
Naomi Watts, Vionnet- “About Ray” Premiere
I want to like this Robert De Niro “Casino” Valentine’s Day themed suit— and trust me, I love a woman in a suit— but this is failing to excite me. So. Many. Creases.
Naomi Watts, Fausto Puglisi- HFPA and InStyle TIFF Party
Tossing in a few extensions, the blonde beauty chose and incredibly interesting Fausto Puglisi Black lace and neon Green sheer dress showing off her enviable pins paired with simple lace heels. I wouldn’t say this is my favorite look for Ms.Watts, but it’s interesting and keeps her one to watch. Least she’s having fun with Fashion!
Elizabeth Olsen, Juan Carlos Obando- “I Saw The Light” Premiere
Just when I thought Elizabeth Olsen couldn’t get any more chic and sophisticated, she gave us a gothically romantic offering in a silky Juan Carlos Obando peplum bell sleeved top and cascading asymmetrical skirt paired with stacked Brian Atwood sandals at the premiere of her new film, “I Saw The Light.”
Everything about this look screams elegance from her textured chignon to her bronze-y make-up. There’s a witchy vibe here that suits Ms.Olsen perfectly. And those cheekbones!
Tom Hiddleston, Polo Ralph Lauren- “I Saw The Light” Premiere
Like Mr.Gyllenhaal, Tom Hiddleston rolled up to the premiere of “I Saw The Light” looking all kinds of handsome in a monochromatic well tailored Polo Ralph Lauren Navy suit. His grooming is impeccably masculine.
Elizabeth Olsen, Juan Carlos Obando- HFPA and InStyle TIFF Party
From sophisticated to impossibly cool, the Scarlet Witch rocked Juan Carlos Obando separates featuring an asymmetrical sleveless cascading top, perfectly cut satin pants, and rose gold metallic Dior heels paired with a The Row tasseled pony hair clutch. A breezy night had Ms.Olsen top her look off with a faux fur jacket casually draped over her shoulders.
Her “cool girl” length hair is perfectly effortless paired with the Fashion forward look and that oxblood lip only radiates her confidence. Everything about this look is fresh in being just the right amount of minimal to be so captivating.
I’d say this and Ms.Olsen’s Calvin Klein offering last week are my favorite looks from my favorite Olsen in 2015, so far.
Elizabeth Olsen- “High Rise” Premiere
Ladies, this is how you do sexy without over-doing it. The actress may have skipped the Red Carpet for rumored beau Tom Hiddleston’s film, but she rocked a 3/4 length sleeve leather mini with obi belt detail, classic Louboutin’s, and her favorite The Row clutch. Easy breezy hair and a punchy lip completed her look.
Elizabeth Olsen, Atea Oceanie and The Row- “I Saw The Light” Press and Entertainment Weekly Must List TIFF Party
Giving us a Downtown monochromatic look, Ms.Olsen paired her blue-hued look featuring a Atea Oceanie double breasted suede jacket, The Row separates, and cute flat boots with a textured low braid courtesy of the talented Mark Townsend. It’s nice she’s giving us a range of looks from very Fashion-y to able to recreate.
Elizabeth Olsen, Brock Collection- “I Saw The Light” Press Conference and W Magazine Studio Lounge
I was surprised to see Ms.Olsen in this crisp White Brock Collection shirt dress paired with White and Green Fendi sandals as it’s not exactly in her Fashion wheelhouse. Nevertheless it’s a lovely look and very Diane Keaton, another fantastic actress.
Julianne Moore, Valentino- “Maggie’s Plan” Premiere
Gothic beauty must have been on the invite because Julianne Moore also donned a hauntingly gorgeous Valentino flowy gown with band jacket inspired detail at the bust and sheer sleeves. Even wearing a Black gown, the Oscar winner is giving us a textural and stunning look.
More modern of a hairstyle would have been preferred here; the undo feels a bit “eh.”
Julianne Moore, Sonia Rykiel- Entertainment Weekly Must List TIFF Party
Making the rounds at TIFF, Ms.Moore stopped by the EW Must party in a multi-colored multi-directional nubby Sonia Rykiel dress with kimono sleeves paired with Givenchy heels. This wouldn’t have been my first pick in a dress for the actress to wear, but it’s interesting enough and she looks happy.
Julianne Moore, BOSS- “Freeheld” Premiere
Easily my favorite of the three, the beauty rocked a killer custom BOSS jumpsuit with cumber-bun detail at the bust perfectly nodding to the menswear tux-inspiration. Beachy textured waves, the most gorgeous diamond cuff and earrings I have ever seen, the smokiest smoky eye imaginable, and Givenchy platforms complimented her boy meets girl look.
Julianne Moore, Saint Laurent- In Conversation with Julianne Moore
At a conversation with the actress, Ms.Moore wore a graphic Saint Laurent swing dress with bedazzled collar and Louboutin wedge ankle boots. It may not be a Fashion home run, but definitely fits the actress’ laid back vibe and is event appropriate. I love her hair here.
Julianne Moore, Proenza Schouler- Variety Studio at TIFF
With multiple films at the festival, Ms.Moore donned a unique Black Proenza Schouler dress with front ruffle embossed with studs paired with Louboutin heels while making the rounds. I love how unique and textured this piece is but wish she’d worn her Givenchy platforms, even though those Louboutin’s are super sexy.
Idris Elba- “Beats of No Nation” Premiere
Generally handsome fella and fantastic actor Idris Elba struck the right amount of Downtown cool and formal in an all Black ensemble featuring a classic leather jacket and slim pants offset with a charcoal tie. I would have picked a roughed up pair moto-boot rather than the matchy-matchy kicks, but it’s still a great look.
Dakota Johnson, Alexander McQueen- “Black Mass” Premiere
As lovely as Dakota Johnson looks in her whimsical Alexander McQueen printed gown, it’s feeling more appropriate for that scene in “Sex and The City” film where the girls all go on Carrie’s honeymoon in Mexico rather than at a prestigious film festival. Maybe it’s an in person thing…
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, Victoria Beckham- “Black Mass” Premiere
Apparently Zoot Suit’s are back and Johnny Depp is a fan…what is happening here? Seriously, it’s killing me. Wife Amber Heard looks va va voom sexy in her body con Victoria Beckham gown and gorgeous satin pumps, if not a bit formulaic.
Kate Mara, Valentino- “The Martian” Premiere
Kate Mara’s Gold and Black Valentino metallic mini featuring insanely gorgeous details— from stripes at the neckline to tons of ruffles— is honestly a piece of art. The hues of her auburn hair and deep lip compliment the dress to a T, but, I still can’t help someone else wore this look.
This should have been saved for someone else who could have breathed more life into this look…ahem, like her “The Martian” co-star Jessica Chasten…ahem. The Styling is flawless.
Kate Mara, A.L.C.- “The Martian Press Conference
Earlier that day Ms.Mara wore a cut out Red A.L.C. 70’s bordering on 80’s jumpsuit with Brian Atwood kiss print pumps and what is now her signature “Lost Boy’s” haircut. Again, kind of lifeless…
Jessica Chastain, Lanvin- “The Martian” Press Conference
Strawberry blonde beauty Jessica Chastain paired that perfect blow-out with a Black and White tweed Lanvin dress cinched at the waist and sparkly Louboutin’s at “The Martian” press conference. This is a great example of a perfect photo call look: not too flashy for press, and still very ladylike. I honestly thought this was Chanel.
Jessica Chastain, Givenchy- “The Martian” Premiere
The Oscar nominee (how doesn’t she have one of those yet?) wowed in a crushed velvet midnight Blue billowy sleeved Givenchy with insanely gorgeous laser cut detail running throughout it with matching velvet heels and a pinned up faux bob.
While I am loving her confidence paired with a classic Red nail and lip, I really, really wish this dress had been floor length with a sexy slit as it would have made more an impact. As is, it’s kind of cutting the actress off in a strange place. Am I alone here?
Ellen Page, Saint Laurent- “Freeheld” Premiere
Yet another boy-meets-girl Menswear inspired ensemble, Ellen Page’s Saint Lauren’t look couldn’t be any cooler if it tried. Not only is she giving us confidence, but this whole look is very much so her personal style which is nice to see translated onto a Red Carpet.
Amber Heard, Elie Saab- “The Danish Girl” Premiere
Again, I still don’t really know who Amber Heard is but she looks stunning in this embellished Elie Saab gown if not a bit washed out.
Evan Rachel Wood, Gucci- “Into The Forest” Premiere
Evan Rachel Wood is giving us 80’s “Working Girl” Realness (that eye make-up, yikes!) in her Autumnally themed Gucci suit.
Tom Hiddleston, Elisabeth Moss, and Luke Evans- “High Rise” Press Conference
Mr.Hiddleston continued his effortless approach to classic Menswear in a elegantly cut pea coat over a simple Navy sweater, Black pants with a slight sheen, and perfectly beat up boots. “High Rise” co-star Elisabeth Moss looked lovely in a Black and White body con look that was much more easy to look at than her other TIFF looks (see below…) but her White pumps are a total eye sore. Also, who’s her hair colorist? Yikes…Elisabeth, get your money back Girlfriend.
Easily my best dressed man at TIFF, Luke Evans offered a casual yet stylish look of a crisp white shirt, perfectly fit dark jeans, and an indigo blazer featuring a subtle stripe and perfect fit. Topped off with caramel oxfords he’s looking quite dapper.
Luke Evans- HFPA and InStyle TIFF Party
Continuing his dapper streak, Mr.Evans wore a mutli-grey patterned three piece suit with buttoned up shirt and contrast buttons. Really digging his super cropped do.
Luke Evans- “High Rise” Premiere
Sticking with a dark palette the handsome Brit rocked a charcoal and Black offering with a contrast lapel blazer and a Johnny Cash-esque fitted pant and shirt. Of all three looks this is my favorite as it flatters his slim but muscular build best.
Elle Fanning, Pucci- “About Ray” Premiere
Elle Fanning just proved she may be a Fashion one to watch very soon in this extremely special Black and White Pucci multi-teared deep-V gown. Stunning. That’s all.
Mischa Barton- TIFF Gala
Oh, look, Mischa Barton is still around…
Susan Sarandon- HFPA and InStyle TIFF Party
Don’t worry: Susan Sarandon was at TIFF looking all kinds of awesome dressed up as a very chic flasher. She’ll never not be cool.
Jessica Chastain, Prabal Gurung- Entertainment Weekly Must List TIFF Party
Of all Ms.Chastain’s looks, I least like this Prabal Gurung criss cross rose gold top and kicky skirt paired with boring Black office pumps. Her center part is also not working here.
Rachel Weisz, Louis Vuitton- “The Lobster” Premiere
Oozing effortlessness, Rachel Weisz wowed in an army Green Louis Vuitton ensemble featuring a uniquely detailed t-shirt, corset-y belt, and embroidered floor length skirt at “The Lobster” premiere.
Not only is this beyond a refreshing look in a sea of all too similar gowns, but it’s just the right balance of laid back and couture. Her chestnut waves and barely there make-up don’t hurt either.
Rachel Weisz, Gucci- HFPA and InStyle TIFF Party
From laid back to sassy, Ms.Weisz’s naughty but Fashionable maid-inspired Gucci was an interesting choice for the Oscar Winner.
Rachel McAdams, Cuchine et Oches- “Every Thing Will Be Fine” Premiere
Future “Doctor Strange” actress Rachel McAdams also got the memo Goth is back in a sleek and sheer Cuchine et Oches kicky strapless dress with bondage-y Louboutin’s and vampy lips. Her textured bob and perfect stance heighten the Canadian beauty’s look.
Rachel McAdams, Zimmerman- “The Princess Bride” TIFF Reading
From dark to light, Ms.McAdams chose a gauzy and lovely long sleeved Zimmerman dress with soft, soft make-up and a glossy do. One has to imagine such an etherial look was chosen in honor of the event, a live reading of “The Princess Bride.” If anyone’s not familiar with the film, shame on you.
Kristen Stewart, Chanel- “Equals” Premiere
Nothing about this Chanel gown works for Kristen Stewart. Not From the weird slicked back hair to the unfortunately heavy eye make-up. Ms.Stewart also doesn’t look too confident in he hunched and “I don’t wanna be here…” stance. Why not rock a Menswear inspired look? Least she’d be happier…and far more confident.
Toni Collette, Oscar de la Renta- “I Miss You Already” Premiere
As someone who’s a huge fan of Toni Collette as an actress and her style, I was really disappointed by her “I Miss You Already” sunny premiere look. It doesn’t fit her Fashion MO and it actually looks a little too big on the actress’ fit bod. Had Cate Blanchett or Sarah Jessica Parker worn this it would have been a home run.
Toni Collette, Marc Jacobs- “I Miss You Already” Press Conference
Going for a far more subtle a look, Ms.Collette paired a Marc Jacobs leather motorcycle jacket with an all Black ensemble and nude heels. This fits Ms.Collette’s style far more.
Toni Collette- “Desierto” Premiere
I sincerely don’t know what is going on here…at least her hair is cute.
Jane Fonda, Saint Laurent- “Youth” Premiere
Jane Fonda was at the Toronto International Film Festival in a gold lame Saint Laurent gown and massive diamond choker. I can die happily now.
Rachel McAdams, Valentino- “Spotlight” Premiere
I can’t help but be a little let down by Ms.McAdam’s sheer “look at my panties” Valentino number. It’s stunning and clearly a work of art but this whole sheer dress look at my rockin’ bod thing has had it’s day in the sun…I’m fatigued by these pieces. I digress.
Kate Winslet, Badgley Mischka- “The Dressmaker” Premiere
This is what a Movie Star looks like, folks. Just in case you didn’t know. Breathtaking.
Sandra Bullock, David Koma- “Our Brand in Crisis” Premiere
Sandra Bullock debuted new bangs at the premiere of “Our Brand in Crisis” this week where she donned a geometric body-con David Koma dress and nude heels. I am digging her new look, but the make-up is too severe. Also, as much as I think her body be bangin’, the dress is not my favorite.
Sandra Bullock, Max Mara- “Our Brand in Crisis” Press
Livening things up a bit, Ms.Bullock rocked a 70’s influenced Max Mara coral belted keyhole detail jumpsuit and nude strappy sandals. Co-star Zoe Kazan’s Black ensemble is super cute but she needs to burn those shoes…
Sandra Bullock- Entertainment Weekly Must List TIFF Party
Back to Black at the EW Must List party, the Oscar winner looked svelte in an off the shoulder Black sweater and sailor pants combo. Nothing to write home about, but still sophisticated.
Emily Blunt, Dior- “Sicario” Premiere
Emily Blunt, shocker, looked stunning in a mesh overlay Dior bustier tea-length dress with Sophia Webster Multi-colored heels. As gorgeous as she looks— her hair and make-up are flawless— the bustier of the dress seems a bit too small for Ms.Blunt. The cups of the dress are deliberately not centered but it’s making her chest look weird and tiny. It looks like a patternmaking mistake rather than a design detail.
Emily Blunt- Entertainment Weekly Must List TIFF Party
This is more like it. Ms.Blunt wore a gorgeous Black suit with tailed blazer and sheer bow blouse paired with the hot shoe of the moment, ombre burgundy to Black Louboutin’s. The strong sense of English Menswear in it’s design makes this suit stand out; it’s a shame most of the details got lost as it’s all Black. Ombre locks and subtle make-up enhanced her look.
Dakota Johnson, Christopher Kane-HFPA and InStyle TIFF Party
I honestly don’t know how to feel about Dakota Johnson’s sheer and crushed velvet Christopher Kane geometrically flouncy dress. I look at it and love it, then think it’s weird, then love it…I’m torn.
Elisabeth Moss- “Truth” Premiere
Elisabeth Moss looks like she borrowed this body-con 3/4 sleeved minty dress from the set of “Mad Men.” While that shade of blonde is quite honestly garish on the talented actress, I love the Cerulean heels chosen to offset the Green.
Brie Larson- “Freeheld” Premiere
Brie Larson looks like she is wearing an updated version of Carrie Bradshaw’s naked dress from “Sex and The City.” That said, her Old Hollywood locks and vampy make-up save this look from being a snooze. Since “United States of Tara” she can also do no wrong in my book, so, let’s move on…
Kate Mara, Valentino- Entertainment Weekly Must List TIFF Party
Ms.Mara’s Black eyelet-y sheer Valentino mini may be a bit more her style, but it feels like a total rerun as it’s almost the exact same silhouette as her other Valentino offering.
